between 1978-1997 the burg giebichenstein university of art and design kept a ceramic workshop in bürgel whose leader wolfgang philler was. under his direction the students got involved in working with ceramic. the exhibition in the bürgel ceramic museum shows the work of wolfgang philler and the second part lights the work of graduates of the burg giebichenstein.

one of my favourites was this buyable piece from the museum
shop. [salt and multiple glazed stoneware, h. 17,3cm]

an elegant briefcase of the veb lederwarenfabrik pößneck identifiable by a rare original zipper label. the beautiful appearance underlined with the retractable handle was probably made by in-house designers. [black leather, 29x42,5x9cm]

originally designed as the base of a ashtray, this piece is rearranged in a dish set. that was surely not meant but it is beautiful anyway. [white porcelain and ash wood, 35x11,4cm]

horst giese & martin kelm – coffee funnel set | 1960

this coffee funnel set brews a cup of coffee without using a coffee machine. [meladur plastic, h. 12,7cm]

irmgard kotte-weidauer – vase | c. 1960

a rare vase by the dresden-based glass artist irmgard kotte-weidauer. she established her workshop in the early 1930s and worked there for more than 45 years. many times she was participant of the “grassi-messe” in leipzig. [glass with metal inclusions and diamond stipped engraving, h. 20,5cm]

albin schaedel – ensemble of vases | 1959

albin schaedel was the renovator of making glass before the lamp. his name is associated with countless pioneering inventions. but i admire albin schaedel for his keen sense of timeless shapes and his eye on perfect proportions, best viewable on such plain vessels. the second vase from right was my first find of the year. [lamp-blown glass, h. 12,8-24cm]

one of my greatest addition to my collection of design made in gdr last year – a museums piece of gerda köerting. a copie was shown at the grassimesse in 1968. happy 2012!
